ClimaGrün specialises in developing green roof systems for all types of surface that require waterproofing, as well as attractive and energy-efficient solutions.

In 2021, Germany and Belgium experienced historic floods resulting in hundreds of casualties and billions of euros' worth of damage. Since then, new buildings in these areas have been required to have green roof solutions that can only be irrigated with rainwater. These roofs retain rainfall in bad weather and, if designed properly, stay green even in hot weather, thereby alleviating summer heat. ClimaGrün creates such solutions. The company installs high-performance roofs that can support up to 80 tonnes per square metre and use a smart store-and-release system to manage rainwater for other uses.

Our Tech Transfer Green team collaborated with ClimaGrün on the implementation of its innovative R&D project. With their specialisation in energy systems, sustainable buildings and neighbourhoods, and water technologies, they were the perfect partners for the project. The team supported the company with market analysis, drawing on their expertise and network. They developed a proprietary component, the water storage module, as well as a calculation tool to digitalise the green roof design phase. Both were created within 18 months, partly thanks to a successful collaboration with Fraunhofer Italia. The software, developed in collaboration with the non-profit research institution, can adapt rooftop or façade planting to suit any need or climate zone, accurately and easily identifying the most suitable components and plant species. Today, the South Tyrolean company designs green systems worldwide, from Paris to New York.
