What the lab researches

Artificial Intelligence Laboratory (AI-Lab)

Developing Artificial Intelligence for practical applications

Research, technology transfer and training in AI, data science and intelligent systems.

How does an idea become a useful Artificial Intelligence application? The Artificial Intelligence Laboratory combines academic expertise with high-performance technical infrastructure to explore exactly that. This multidisciplinary laboratory at the Faculty of Engineering of the Free University of Bozen-Bolzano provides an environment for research, experimentation, training and the transfer of AI technologies into practice.

The AI-Lab supports companies, public institutions and other partners through consultancy, knowledge transfer, feasibility studies and applied research. It helps them assess the potential of AI realistically, test initial approaches and develop practical applications. Particular attention is paid to the responsible, effective and sustainable adoption of Artificial Intelligence in South Tyrol and beyond.

At its heart is a multifunctional laboratory equipped with powerful computing and storage infrastructure. Researchers, students, companies and professionals can use it to develop AI-based solutions, test prototypes and carry out data-intensive experiments. The lab also serves as an AI technology demonstration environment and a hands-on training centre.

Its research areas range from machine learning, computer vision and data science to data management, data and process mining, knowledge representation and reasoning, logic-based methods, semantic technologies and high-performance computing.
