Cost-effective sensors for high quality environmental monitoring

Reliable data on air quality is essential for the green transformation of cities. Orma Solutions and the Center for Sensing Solutions at Eurac Research joined forces for the Fusion Grant call for proposals, taking a significant step forward in the development of low-cost sensors.

In some situations, less technology is better. This is particularly true when collecting environmental data such as particulate matter concentrations or temperature and humidity levels. The official collection of this kind of data requires certified, high-precision sensors, which are expensive. Much less costly sensors already exist that could be used alongside these to provide a more differentiated, comprehensive picture. However, it is essential to ensure that these sensors do not introduce inaccuracies or errors when measuring, and that the results can be integrated with data from fixed monitoring stations.

Both challenges were addressed in a joint project by Orma Solutions and the Center for Sensing Solutions (Eurac Research) as part of the Fusion Grant call for proposals. It was launched in 2020 by Fondazione Cassa di Risparmio di Bolzano and NOI Techpark, in collaboration with Südtiroler Wirtschaftsring and Rete Economia –WirtschaftsNetz. Orma Solutions and Eurac Research also ensured energy-efficient communication between the sensors and receiving antenna using an experimental LoRaWAN transmission network. This wireless transmission option requires much less energy than WLAN, for example. How did they manage to improve data quality during the investigation with low-tech sensors?
