AI in Medicine: What Do We Gain – and What Might We Lose? 

Medicine is increasingly moving towards personalised care: large datasets and artificial intelligence are set to make prevention, diagnosis and treatment more tailored to the individual. The potential is real – earlier warnings of health risks, more targeted therapies, better outcomes. But this shift raises questions that go far beyond the technology itself. It may change how we define health, and what expectations we attach to prevention and “healthy behaviour”. It shapes how decisions in healthcare are made – and who ultimately has access to sensitive health data. Together, we’ll map the opportunities and risks, and discuss the conditions needed to ensure that progress remains fair, safe and human-centred. 

Joining the discussion are Sally Wyatt, Professor of Digital Cultures at Maastricht University, whose research explores how digital technologies reshape everyday life, and Deborah Mascalzoni, head of the ELSI research group (Ethical, Legal and Social Implications) at Eurac Research’s Institute for Biomedicine and Associate Professor of Biomedical Ethics at Uppsala University, whose work centres on data protection, human rights and patient participation. The evening will be moderated by Cyntha Wieringa (Ars Electronica Future Lab, Linz).
