Bridging Business, Code and AI: Governed Automation with Executable BPMN

Business processes in public-sector and regulated IT systems are rarely simple. They often run over long periods, involve multiple people and systems, and still need to remain transparent, auditable and adaptable.

In our December session, Renè Lamber from RISE Italia will show how executable BPMN can bridge the gap between business analysis and technical implementation. Instead of serving merely as documentation, process models become deployable, versioned and monitorable architectural components that connect human tasks, services, events, integrations and automation logic.

Drawing on practical examples from document-centric and social-insurance workflows, the talk will explore how process-driven architectures can remain maintainable as requirements evolve. It will also examine where AI can add real value: from document classification and data extraction to routing suggestions and AI agents operating within clearly defined process boundaries.

The central idea is simple: AI becomes more useful in enterprise and public-sector systems when it is not treated as an isolated tool. BPMN can provide the control layer for approvals, escalation paths, retries, audit trails and human-in-the-loop decisions. Tools such as Camunda will serve as a practical reference, while the underlying principles apply across different orchestration technologies.
