Laboratory for the conservation of ancient human remains
The Laboratory for the conservation of human remnants is dedicated to the research and implementation of systems for the preservation of mummies. In particular scientists are working here on special tailor-made display cases for preserving and displaying mummies and exhibits in museums, churches and warehouses. The main objective is to achieve the optimal balance between the environmental and conservation conditions that are needed for the long-term preservation of mummies. The work of this laboratory has already allowed Eurac Research’s Institute for Mummy Studies to register two patents. The first concerns a special wax that can be used to seal the display case and create a completely oxygen-free environment. The second patent relates to a “pressure compensator”, which ensures pressure equalisation inside the display case.
